OLTD 506 Social Media
Beginning with the underlying philosophy of Web 2.0, this course will investigate educational use of social media (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, YouTube), open and fenced systems, developmentally appropriate use of social media, digital footprint considerations, development of digital citizenship, as well as the evolution of supporting policy and procedures.

- Develop knowledge of key social media terms & concepts
- Develop understanding of: functional contexts & constraints, employment considerations, privacy tensions, BC legal, school policies/procedure, professional ethics re. social media use in education
- Plan 2-3 educational activities & supporting documentation for a single social medial tool
- Create a permission form compatible with requirements of a BC public institution or Create incident response chart
- Evaluate social media tools advantages & disadvantages for teaching, learning, & professional activities—and personal/professional comfort in navigating use
- Analyze the BC context for social media use in education.
- Evaluate advantages & disadvantages of a social media tool for teaching, learning, & professional activities
- Plan 2-3 developmentally appropriate activities for tool within constraints of the social media service & policies in context compatible with requirements of a BC public institution
- Create content for student & parental training to address 1 social media tool use & management of risks compatible with requirements of a BC public institution
- Share integrated resource resources with others
- Evaluate advantages & disadvantages for teaching, learning, & professional activities
- Analyze social media tools for educational uses compatible with requirements of a BC public institution
- Select a single tool to suit educational purpose(s)/goal(s).
- Create incident response chart compatible with requirements of a BC public institution
- Analyze the BC educational context for social media use.
