Assessment
Assessment is a difficult but essential part of learning. How we approach it can greatly affect the learning of the student. Students have a wealth of information at their fingertips in the form of smartphones, tablets, and the Internet. The standardized testing model is an inefficient way of assessing a student's learning. Students are so diverse in ability and classes are so multicultural and not every student has the same capacity to learn at the same age. Summative assessment does not accurately represent the student's learning. Formative assessment combined with descriptive feedback is necessary to be able to manage this wide range of learners. The focus on assessment should be to track each student's progress and guide them to the next step. It seems foolish to expect a student to jump over a huge abyss to catch up because of a standard based purely on grade level or age.
