The resource I used, http://codewithchris.com/, was very useful in leading me through the process of building a basic app. The 17-part video series was chunked into manageable pieces which were appropriately timed to give the learner what was necessary for the next step. There are also different free video series on his YouTube channel, which I have not explored yet. Although the resulting app was not a completely functioning version of the card game "War" according to the rules, this was not the point of the course. It succeeded in teaching the basics of app programming very well and linked to the necessary resources for Swift from Apple, which would help with further development of the app.
I have continued to play around with the coding in the app to try and bring it closer to the completed version of the game, but unfortunately, I don't have any new visuals to show at this time.
I think that this course is a great way to introduce oneself into the world of coding for iOS. Although are many other programming languages out there and many free resources to learn from such as Codecademy, Khan Academy, iTunes U Courses, I believe Codewithchris.com is an excellent open educational resource for anyone trying to get a taste of coding. The nice thing about this resource is that it can be done over a period of weeks whenever you have time, like I did, or over a few days if you wanted to get through it quickly. The concepts can easily be applied to building other apps. I would recommend this resource to anyone interested in coding, or as an introduction module for middle to high school students.
Perhaps by the end of OLTD, I will have had some more time to play with this and I will have a completed app!
Until then...
